Movers at work outside a suburban home
The part nobody warns you about

From “under contract” to keys is about six weeks.

Most of it disappears into inspections, appraisals and paperwork. The movers worth having are booked two to three weeks out — and every other closing in your county lands on the same last weekend of the month as yours.

Day 0
Under contract
You are here. This is the cheapest and calmest day to price your move.
Day 7–14
Inspection & appraisal
Attention goes to the house. The calendar quietly fills up.
Day 21–30
Most people start calling
The good crews are already booked for month-end. Prices firm up.
Day 30–45
Closing & move day
Whoever is still free sets the price, and you take it.

What usually goes wrong

Five ways a move gets expensive, and what to do instead.

None of this is exotic. It is what happens to most people who leave the movers until the paperwork is done.

Finding three movers is the slow part

Working out who actually covers both ends of your route, then repeating your details to each one and waiting on the call back. It is a few evenings you were going to spend on the house.

Instead

Describe the move once. Up to three movers who cover your route come back to you with their own price, and you never chase anybody.

The quote that grows on move day

A cheap non-binding estimate is a guess, not a price. The crew re-weighs the truck, the number climbs, and your things are already on it.

Instead

Ask each mover for a binding or not-to-exceed estimate in writing. We tell you to ask, and a firm number is the only kind you can compare like for like.

Everyone closes at the end of the month

Closings cluster on the last few days, so the last weekend of any month is the single hardest slot to book — and the most expensive one.

Instead

Price it the week you go under contract. If a mid-week or mid-month date works, movers will often price it noticeably lower.

The building wants paperwork your mover doesn’t have

Condos, co-ops and managed buildings ask for a certificate of insurance naming the building, sometimes days in advance. Not every outfit can produce one.

Instead

Every mover we match you with is licensed and insured, so a certificate is a phone call, not a crisis on the morning.

You have no idea what it should cost

One number on its own tells you nothing. Is $2,400 a bargain or daylight robbery? Without a second and a third, you cannot know.

Instead

Three prices for the same job, side by side, is the only honest benchmark there is — and it is the cheapest negotiating position you will ever have.

Three steps, in this order

How it actually works

  1. STEP 1

    You tell us the basics

Where from, where to, roughly how much there is, and when. That is everything a mover needs before quoting.

  2. STEP 2

We match up to three movers

Licensed companies that cover both ends of your route and have crews free on your date. If fewer than three fit, you get fewer — we don’t pad the list.

  3. STEP 3

    They quote you directly

Each contacts you with their own price. Compare them, pick one, or pick none. We are not in the middle of the booking.

Ask for it while you’re quoting

Six things worth pricing now, not on move day.

Every one of these is cheaper as a line on the original quote than as a favour asked at 8am with a truck outside. Mention whatever applies and the movers will price it in.

Moving boxes being packed

Packing & unpacking

Full pack, kitchen-and-fragiles only, or just the boxes and paper delivered a week ahead.

Storage between dates

When your closing and your move-in don’t line up. Ask for it up front and it is one bill, not two moves.

Specialty items

Piano, gun safe, treadmill, fine art, aquarium. These need the right crew and the right equipment.

Long-distance or interstate

Different licence, different pricing model. Worth quoting separately from a local hourly rate.

Debris & junk removal

The garage, the basement, the thing you were never taking anyway. Cheaper on the same truck.

Extra hands, same crew

An extra mover for a few hours usually costs less than the overtime a short-staffed day creates.

You do not have to decide any of it now. Mention what might apply in the form and each mover will price it as an option, so you are comparing complete numbers rather than surprises.

So you can read the quotes

What a mover is actually pricing

Two quotes for the same house can differ by hundreds for perfectly honest reasons. These are the six that move the number most.

DistanceLocal moves are usually priced by the hour; anything long-distance by weight and miles. Different models, so compare like with like.
VolumeNot your square footage — the cubic feet that go on the truck. A decluttered 3-bed can price below a full 2-bed.
AccessStairs, no elevator, a long carry from the door to the truck, or a street the truck can’t park on. All of it costs crew time.
DateMonth-end, weekends and summer are peak. Mid-week and mid-month are the quiet slots, and they price like it.
PackingMaterials and labour, and the single biggest lever you control. Packing the non-fragile things yourself takes a visible chunk off the number.
ValuationBasic liability is pennies per pound and covers almost nothing. Full-value protection costs more and is usually worth asking about.

The one question to ask all three

“Is this a binding estimate, a not-to-exceed estimate, or a non-binding one?” The answer tells you whether the number you were given is a price or a hopeful guess — and it is the single fastest way to tell a serious mover from one you should walk away from.

One form, three prices

Take ten minutes now, or lose a week later.

You are going to compare movers eventually. Doing it while you still have five weeks is the difference between choosing one and settling for whoever answers.

The questions people actually ask

Why did you email me?
Your home was recently listed as under contract or pending in public property records. That is the only reason, and it is the only thing we know about you.
Who gets my information?
Only the moving companies we match you with, so they can quote your move. We don’t sell your details to anyone else, and we never pass your phone number to anyone for their own marketing.
Does it cost anything?
No. The movers pay us for the introduction. You pay nothing, there is no markup on your quote, and you are never obliged to book.
How many movers will contact me?
Up to three. If fewer than three genuinely cover your route and have crews free on your date, you will hear from fewer — we would rather send you two that fit than three that don’t.
What if I’ve already booked a mover?
Then you don’t need us. Use the unsubscribe link in any email and you won’t hear from us again.
How do I stop hearing from you?
Unsubscribe in one click from any email, or reply with the word STOP. It takes effect immediately and permanently.
